According to Digitimes.com, AMD is expected to officially announce the Southern Islands GPUs in October, with sales starting as early as November 2010.
The reports come from unnamed industry insiders, that the rumoured ATI Radeon HD 6000 series will be ready for market before the holiday season.
ATI’s next-gen GPU was originally intended to be a 32nm product, codenamed Northern Islands, however TSMC passed on 32nm GPU chip development, opting instead to focus on R&D of the 28nm process.
AMD/ATI was forced to adjust its future plans; instead Southern Islands will be released, based on the same 40nm as its current HD 5000 series.
Sources expect that company will be dropping prices of its current lineup within the next few months in order to make room for new flagship cards.
