After much speculation it has been confirmed that Assassin's Creed 3
will take place during the American revolution. Images with hints of
this have been floating around the internet for a few days now but
Ubisoft has released the official box-art for Assassin's Creed 3, which
confirms that the game will indeed take place during the American
Revolution. Prior to this several images were seen on Kotaku, Game
Informer, and Shacknews leading to this speculation. No word yet on a
release date or if the game will use the intrusive DRM that previous
titles did.

Borderlands 2 PC uses Steamworks
More and more publishers seem to be seeing Steamworks as the best viable
DRM on the market and 2K Games is no exception. All PC editions of
Borderlands 2 will use Valve's Steamworks suite as their DRM. Steamworks
supports snazzy features beyond simple copy protection, Gearbox's
shooter-RPG will also use it for multiplayer matchmaking, Steam Cloud
storage, achievements, auto-updating, downloadable content, "and more."
How Steamworks... works is that if you buy a boxed edition of
Borderlands 2, you'll need to register the game with a Steam account,
and launch it through Steam. The box will still contain a disc to
install the game from, but you'll have the option to download it
directly through Steam whenever you please. Digital distributors other
than Steam will simply sell you a product key to activate on Steam.
Steamworks was to be expected, really, as 2K Games has used it for PC
editions of games it's published since Mafia II in 2010. It briefly
dabbled in Games for Windows Live before then but, thankfully, that was a
short-lived experiment.
Borderlands 2 is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 18. As ever, a selection of shiny things are on offer as pre-order bonuses.

Far Cry 3 Coming September 4, 2012; New Trailer Packs Incredible Visuals
For all of you PC gamers who didn't play the Uncharted series, and are
starved of the visually-intense tropical-island setting that Dead Island
miserably failed in, Far Cry 3 promises to be a bomb! Ubisoft released
the latest "Stranded" trailer on the 15th, with a fuller trailer slated
for later today, that shows incredibly detailed visuals, that are a
throw-back to the original Crytek-made Far Cry. The trailer follows a
possible protagonist touring a tropical island with his explorer
friends, most of it is shown in found-footage style, leading up to one
of the explorers' encounter with the game's antagonist. The trailer also
gives out the release-date, September 4, 2012.
The trailer video can be watched here.
Caution: The trailer contains strong-language, violence, and dubstep.

Roccat Teases with the Savu Gaming Mouse
Gaming peripherals major Roccat Studios released a teaser picture of its
latest gaming mouse, the Roccat Savu. This mouse is designed to strike a
functional balance between that makes it fit for various gaming styles
(FPS thru RPG), and a size-balance that makes it perfect for various
gripping styles. Entry-level gaming mice already accomplish some of
that, but Roccat probably sensed that as you move up the price ladder,
gaming mice tend to get more specialized in size and style. The Savu
probably converges high-end features (such as a high-resolution sensor,
high-quality switches, weight/balance adjustments?) with an balanced
design. Roccat will unveil its newest rodent at CeBIT (early March).

ASUS Launches ROG Rampage IV GENE X79 mATX Gaming Board
Rampage IV GENE continues the legacy of Republic of Gamers motherboards
by delivering gamers with enhanced performance that places a premium on
fidelity and speed. SupremeFX III EMI-shielded audio guarantees better
in-game sound, Intel Ethernet LAN and ROG GameFirst technology boost
online multiplayer performance, while ROG Extreme Engine Digi+ II
digital voltage regulation promotes improved overclocking.
The board further uses Black Metallic capacitors and NexFET Power Block MOSFETs for added durability and heat resistance. Unlike budget micro ATX boards, it supports 2-way NVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossFireX.
SupremeFX III audio
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) remains a detriment to quality sound, causing distortion and loss unless properly mitigated. Rampage IV GENE uses a custom PCB "red line" layout which physically isolates SupremeFX III hardware from the rest of the motherboard to eliminate interference and generate clearer, more precise, and deeper audio. Better sound helps competitive gamers with improved positioning and spatial awareness, in addition to promoting greater immersion. SupremeFX III comes with its own steel shield, a 1500uF capacitor for stable audio power delivery, plus gold-plated audio jacks. The setup has been tested to 110 dB SNR, ensuring lossless performance. EAX Advanced HD 5.0, Creative Alchemy, and THX TruStudio PRO are all fully supported. Rampage IV GENE comes bundled with a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi MB2 suite, providing the finest game audio of any micro ATX board, with realistic sound effect reproduction, lifelike music, and theater-grade movie sound.
Lag-resistant online gaming and multi-GPU support
Intel Ethernet reduces CPU utilization by as much as 35% when processing online activity compared to systems using standard LAN, which combats latency and boosts packet transmission. Better network performance presents an edge for gamers, with the overwhelming importance of global online multiplayer gaming requiring faster connections for a smooth and competitive experience. ROG-exclusive GameFirst contributes to achieving this goal, working as a connection supervisor to prioritize bandwidth availability and ensure games receive sufficient resources, even when downloading occurs in the background. To further accommodate gamers, Rampage IV GENE supports PCI Express 3.0 and 2-way SLI/CrossFireX for increased future proofing and flexibility.
Greater overclocking through improved endurance and stability
Rampage IV GENE ships with the exclusive ROG Extreme Engine Digi+ II design, consisting of digital voltage regulators for refined tuning and higher power efficiency. Gamers can adjust voltages in more precise increments, which aids in overclocking. Supporting this, Black Metallic capacitors and NexFET Power Block MOSFETs easily surpass the capabilities of generic parts. They resist heat better, last up to five times longer, and can take up to 20% higher temperatures than generic components, culminating in a highly durable and long lasting board that reduces the likelihood of instability even when running high intensity applications.
First X79 board officially certified by the USB-IF
In addition to its many advantages, the Rampage IV GENE has also secured the honor of being the first Intel X79-based motherboard formally authorized and certified USB 3.0-ready by the USB Implementers Forum. Certification speaks of the extensive testing and compatibility assurance ASUS puts into every board from early development to shipping. Always committed to advancing technology and giving consumers the best performance possible, ASUS has gone further and self-developed USB 3.0 Boost to accelerate data speeds beyond reference requirements. The multi-mode design of USB 3.0 Boost increases device connectivity for both the traditional BOT protocol and the newer UASP, and its inclusion on ROG boards offers gamers even better value than before.
Complete range of X79 gaming boards
The release of Rampage IV GENE follows the previous launch of Rampage IV Extreme and Rampage IV Formula Intel Socket LGA 2011/X79 Express Chipset-based models. The three maintain ROG leadership in the gaming and overclocking motherboard segments, providing consumers with superior performance and the finest quality in a vibrant PC gaming scene where technical excellence is critical.

Razer Reveals 'Project Fiona' PC Gaming Tablet at CES
Razer, the world leader in high performance gaming hardware, is proud to
announce their newest gaming concept design - the Project Fiona PC
Gaming Tablet. Unlike other tablets designed for general use and casual
gaming, Project Fiona is a tablet concept designed to play the most
popular PC games of today with an intuitive control setup for a
phenomenal on-the-go gaming experience.
Powered by Intel Core i7
Razer worked closely with Intel to harness the power of its third generation Intel Core i7 processor in Project Fiona. As a result, Razer's tablet is more akin to a fully functioning PC; and yet in a form factor and platform highly familiar to everybody.
Instead of relying on developers to work on a suite of brand new applications for Project Fiona, many PC games today run natively on the tablet concept without the need to be ported, optimized, or developed from scratch.
Moreover, Project Fiona will feature one of the most powerful processors integrated in a tablet form factor. Instead of the casual and mobile-only games that run on under-powered tablets, Project Fiona will run full-fledged PC games that have never run on a tablet form factor before until today.
"Project Fiona's combination of high performance Intel-based gaming hardware and innovative tablet design is specifically focused for PC gamers. It will unleash the PC gamer to play their existing and future high-end games in one of the most exciting new form factors - a tablet," said Brad Graff, Director of Partner Marketing, Netbook & Tablet Group, Intel.
PC Gaming User Interface Designed For a Tablet Form Factor
Razer's multi-award winning user interface and ergonomics team have developed an all-new hybrid user interface scheme for Project Fiona. Featuring integrated dual game controllers with ultra-precise analog sticks, Project Fiona runs gamepad-enabled PC games right out of the box.
Along with the game controllers, Project Fiona is also designed with ultra-precise accelerometers and a highly sensitive multi-touch screen. This provides game developers with new game experiential opportunities to develop around the hybrid game control experience offered by Project Fiona. It also ensures current-generation PC games run on the tablet concept, as well as any existing games optimized for the touchscreen interface of a tablet.
Future games developed for Fiona are expected to take advantage of not just the integrated gamepad controls but also integrate core game functionality controls for the touchscreen and accelerometer-based controls.
"While multi-touch screens have become the de facto user interface for tablets, they are not the right interface for serious PC gaming," said Min-Liang Tan, CEO, Razer. "The user interface we have designed for Project Fiona allows all existing PC games to be played right out of the box and also provides game developers new opportunities as they develop next-gen games on a highly-intuitive platform. Both developers and gamers are going to love the new user interface that combines the best of a gamepad, multi-touch screen and accelerometers for an all-new gaming experience on-the-go."
The Most Immersive Gaming Experience on a Tablet
To further intensify the gaming experience with Project Fiona, Razer's integrated dual controllers deliver full force feedback, so every explosion or gun recoil can be felt in the gamer's hands.
THX Ltd., which works with many of the world's most innovative audio and video home entertainment manufacturers, agrees that the tablet adds tremendous flexibility to a gamer’s lifestyle. "Video games, music and entertainment that previously were mainly enjoyed within the home can now be enjoyed anywhere through tablets such as the Razer Concept PC Gaming Tablet," said Chris Golson, Senior Director, Business Development, THX.
Developer units of the Project Fiona Concept PC Gaming Tablet will be made available soon.
Price: Estimated below USD $1,000

SteelSeries Unveils the Ion Wireless Gaming Controller
SteelSeries the leading manufacturer of premium-quality, competitive
gaming peripherals today, introduced the SteelSeries Ion Wireless
Controller. Through a licensing partnership with Zeemote Technology
Inc., the SteelSeries Ion is designed to work fully with your PC,
additionally the controller brings classic control schemes to touch
screen devices like tablets and phones.
The compact controller connects wirelessly through Bluetooth and can be easily customized and configured through its own application on the device.
"For PC users, the SteelSeries Ion is a convenient alternative, especially if they want something other than their mouse or keyboard as their tool. And for consumers with tablets and Smartphones, it really is an ideal accessory," said Bruce Hawver, SteelSeries CEO. "Whether you're sling shooting birds or playing a word game with friends, there are games that are ideal for touch screen. Those types of games however, are not the only games available; there are a number of first-person shooter and RTS games that aren't downloaded or played as frequently as they could be, because the touch screen doesn't provide an optimal experience. The SteelSeries Ion provides the advantage for those types of games."
Measuring only about the size of a standard deck of cards (approximately 108 mm in length, 55.5 mm in width and 18 mm thick); the lightweight controller can be easily stored and carried. It connects through Bluetooth to your PC and/or your mobile device and includes a white LED light on the controller indicating a connection. The SteelSeries Ion includes a rechargeable, lithium battery that will provide up to 20 hours of wireless use and can be plugged into your device for charge and play use.
The SteelSeries Ion boasts a classic controller design that includes 2 mini-joysticks, a left side Dpad button, 2 trigger buttons one at each shoulder, and a four button layout on the right, similar to familiar Nintendo, Xbox 360 and PlayStation controllers. The buttons can be customized through an easy-to-use interface for both PC and mobile devices.
The SteelSeries Ion Wireless Controller will be available in Q3; pricing will be announced closer to its availability.

Razer Reveals the Naga Hex MOBA/action-RPG Gaming Mouse
Razer, the world leader in high performance gaming hardware, is taking
your intense arena battling and frenzied hack and slash gaming to the
next level with the Razer Naga Hex MOBA/action-RPG gaming mouse.
Inspired by the award-winning Razer Naga MMO gaming mouse's 12-button
thumb grid, the Razer Naga Hex features six large thumb buttons
optimized for the user interfaces found in action-RPG and MOBA games.
Excitement in the world of gaming is heating up with the rise of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre, with games like the critically acclaimed League of Legends. Games that throw champions into a ring to arm themselves, level up, and duke it out against one another while defending massive super structures.
Six mechanical buttons optimized for MOBA/action-RPGs
Enter the Razer Naga Hex, designed with six mechanical buttons to specifically bind the spells, abilities, items, and other invaluable commands in MOBA games like League of Legends for faster and easier actuation. With a mechanical key infrastructure that requires less force to actuate, you gain the edge in speed over enemies, attacking before they can react. The Razer Naga Hex is also perfect for obsessive clicking in hack and slash games.
High performance buttons up to 250 clicks a minute
Since both the RPG and MOBA game genres require intensive clicking, the Razer Naga Hex's buttons are constructed with special switches for a performance of up to 250 clicks per minute - perfect for pro-gamers with lightning fast reflexes. Don't worry about hyper-clicking though, as the Razer Naga Hex utilizes switches that are good for up to a whopping 10 million clicks.
Ergonomic shape and interchangeable thumb rests
The Razer Naga Hex is designed with an ergonomic curvature that fits your hand comfortably. The placement of the six thumb buttons has also been perfected over countless design reiterations, and validated by MOBA pro-gamers to ensure you're getting the best game control and grip. 3 interchangeable thumb rests of different heights are included so you get the best comfort and grip that suits you. This is especially important for reducing strain during lengthy gaming sessions at home or at highly competitive tournaments.
Synapse 2.0 enabled
The Razer Naga Hex will also be Razer Synapse 2.0 enabled - this means the mouse is installed with the world's first cloud-based storage software that automatically saves all user custom mouse settings and profiles to a cloud server. These settings can then be accessed from any computer, with any Razer Naga Hex, ensuring that the mouse is ready for use instantly, and setup just the way you like it.
"I love RPG and MOBA games. And I believe that having the right abilities available is the difference between slaying enemies and winning, or dying a miserable death and having your character wiped in hardcore mode," said Robert 'RazerGuy' Krakoff, President, Razer USA. "That's why we designed the Razer Naga Hex - we believe that the six mechanical thumb buttons are going to help gamers stay ahead of the competition with the best ergonomic control."
About the Razer Naga Hex Gaming Mouse
The Razer Naga Hex is perfectly suited for pro-gamers and fans of the MOBA/action-RPG game genres. It is primed with six mechanical thumb buttons for the exact number of controls necessary to suit the user interfaces of those games. Bind your skill-bar or inventory grid to the six buttons for faster, more comfortably efficient access to your full range of powers as you take the competition down.

U.S. Army Attacks the CryEngine
The U.S. Army might be financing one of the most epic videos games ever
made that very few people may ever play. The "game" is called Dismounted Soldier Training System
and was commissioned by the U.S. government back in May for a
staggering cost of 57 million dollars. The contract was awarded to RealTime Immersive Inc.
All of this according to PC Gamer. Everything about this simulator is
said to be cutting edge but the hardware it runs on. In a GamePro
interview with the director of strategic programs at Intelligent
Decisions, Floyd West is said to have stated, "With CryEngine 3 being
used for Crysis 2 and the capabilities that game engine provides, it
allows us to make the most realistic simulation possible. We’re able to
transport soldiers to accurately recreated locales like Afghanistan and
Iraq, where we can simulate everything from visuals to 360-degree
sound."
The virtual reality headsets the trainees wear will run from a backpack unit similar to a top of the range gaming laptop, called the 'Man Wearable Unit'. "While the man wearable units aren’t running on an off-the-shelf Alienware, the internal components themselves are commercial off-the-shelf CPUs and GPUs like NVIDIA graphic cards and whatnot."
As this is an internal military training simulator we the public may never play it. However that doesn't mean we cannot watch the trailers in awe and wonder if our own rigs could render thousands of kilometers in such massive detail.
