Lack of Anti Aliasing (AA) Options for Starcraft II !

ATI’s lack of anti aliasing support for StarCraft II has been well publicized but official responses to the situation were few and far between. We now have what we have been waiting for: clarification.

As some of you may know, in our StarCraft II GPU Comparison we noted that Blizzard will not be including an optional anti aliasing (AA) setting in the retail version of their new game. NVIDIA decided to leap forth into the AA pool right off the bat by including an override option within their Control Panel but the result was a significant performance impact in-game. Nonetheless, the option was there. ATI didn’t follow suit for reasons we will see below.

Before the GPU comparison article went live, we asked ATI for a statement and while we received a “we’re looking into it” at the time, they have since clarified their position. We won’t editorialize here in any way and let you draw your own conclusions.

AMD constantly strives to deliver great gaming experiences for our customers and the upcoming launch of Starcraft II is no exception. Blizzard’s focus on incredible game play for all, means that gamers using ATI Radeon(tm) products can enjoy smooth HD gameplay and industry leading image quality with our current generation of ATI Radeon products as well as many of our past generation cards.

In discussions during the development of StarCraft II, Blizzard indicated that they would not initially include options to set levels of in-game anti-aliasing (“AA”). This meant that support for AA within StarCraft II would only be made possible by including it in the driver, an approach that could significantly impact performance.

Some third party reviews of the Starcraft II beta echo our concerns that AA can cause gameplay impairment. In these reviews, the third parties found that 4x AA led to a reduction in fps rendering at lower screen resolutions, which only became more noticeable at larger resolutions.

After evaluating our options, our engineering team opted not to provide AA support for StarCraft II within the Catalyst Control Center, even though the competition has included AA support in their driver at launch.

We are committed to making AA perform at an acceptable level before we release it to our customers. We will continue to work with Blizzard on this matter and hope to offer our customers an acceptable AA solution at a later date.

Google Nexus One Officially Closed Down

A little over 6 months after Google launched its first official Google phone, the company has been forced to call it quits.

Despite the fact that the Nexus One was actually well reviewed by many bloggers and a popular choice for Android enthusiasts, it didn’t quite receive the iPhone-esque adoption amongst everyday users that Google was expecting. Granted, Google wasn’t exactly overly proactive in its promotion or advertising of the phone either.

The company announced two months ago that they would be eventually closing down the Nexus One store (the primary method of obtaining the phone) after their final shipment of phones was depleted and that last shipment sold out this week. North American consumers are no longer able to purchase the Nexus One; however some remaining phones will still be available through Vodafone in Europe and Asian carriers.

A quick stop at www.google.com/phone shows a note from the company stating, “Sorry, folks… The Nexus One is no longer available for purchase directly from Google. For more information on how to purchase the Nexus One, check out our help center. “

With dozens of Android phones already flooding the market, Google had a distinct disadvantage with the Nexus One and its plan to sell only through its own website. Consumers were not pestered by giant advertisements, banners or yappy salesmen when walking into stores, leaving it primarily up to word of mouth and reviews to sell the phone. As well, the absence of any way for consumers to physically see and test the phone made it difficult to justify a completely blind purchase.

Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, has stated the company has no plans to revisit a second generation of Nexus devices, claiming that the Nexus One accomplished everything Google intended and the company feels there is no need to build hardware to help support the growing Android operating system.

It’s not all bad news though, savvy consumers who purchased the phone(s) are finding a lucrative resale market for the Nexus One, with prices on ebay for new phones over $600USD. Google sold the phone through their store for $529 USD.

Asus Working on Dual GTX480 "MARS II" Graphic Card

Asus was spotted working on Dual GTX480 which will be
successor as for now "MARS II". Asus seems to be believe at their Ares/Mars product so far.

Picked up by TechPowerUp, a dual GTX 480 graphics card, dubbed the “MARS II” features two GF100 chips on a single PCB. The two chips are joined through an internal SLI bridge utilizing an onboard nForce 200 bridge chip. Each GPU boasts an 8+2 phase VRM , 1.536 GB of memory and each matches the stock specs of the GTX 480.

To keep this mini nuclear reactor stable, the card’s PCB features 3 oz copper layers, and is powered by three 8-pin PCI-E power connections.

Asus has said they will be developing a custom cooling solution,

which, given the amount of heat that could be expected, may mean we could just see the world’s first ever GPU Air Conditioner (patent pending) cooling solution.

The best part is that the card will be SLI capable just in case you want to double the fun (as well as everything else).
